Mars Chocolate to Build New Facility in Kansas
Despite a widespread decline in construction spending, the future looks pretty sweet in Topeka. Officials from Mars Chocolate North America—makers of Snickers® and M&M’s® candy—have announced the company's plans to build its first new U.S. manufacturing facility in 35 years.
The facility, which will be located in Kanza Fire Commerce Park, is set to begin manufacturing candy brands in 2013, when the first phase of the construction is expected to be completed. According to company officials, the decision to create a new production site was based on Mars’ commitment to U.S. manufacturing. In addition, the construction project reflects Kansas Governor Sam Brownback’s efforts to promote job growth in the Topeka region.
“We are planning to build this plant with a focus on the long term and look forward to many productive years of manufacturing and community partnership in Topeka,” said Todd Lachman, president of Mars Chocolate Latin America and North America.
Company officials also plan to pursue LEED Gold certification for the facility when it is completed.
