Understanding the Value of Wetlands Wetlands are among the most important ecosystems on the planet and play a vital role in both environmental and human health. Because they exist on nearly every continent in the world, and because local, state, and federal legislation regarding wetlands has changed significantly over the past three decades, understanding the role of wetlands is vitally important for design professionals.
This 1-hour online course will help land surveyors, architects, engineers, landscape architects and others become better acquainted with the changed perception of wetlands in North America, as well as contemporary definitions of wetlands and the many types of wetlands found on this continent.

Did You Know…? Legislation to protect wetlands in America has been driven largely by the 1977 Clean Water Act. Wetlands provide numerous benefits for humans, including flood mitigation, water supply, and the prevention of pollution. However, research shows that since the 1600s more than half of the country’s original wetlands have been filled, drained or converted into farmland, and those losses continue today.
