LEED Credits in Energy and Atmosphere

Thursday
February 17th, 2011

3pm EST / 1.5 LEED General Hours

Category: Project Systems and Energy Impacts

The goal of sustainable development is to create healthy environments through environmentally responsible planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. The Energy and Atmosphere category of LEED is at the heart of the Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System for buildings. This course specifically covers the Energy and Atmosphere category for New Construction (NC).

This course discusses the background of the Energy and Atmosphere LEED credit rating and covers recent changes to the rating.  This course also covers helpful hints on how to best attain energy and atmosphere credit rating goals.  Energy and Atmosphere is the single most important category in LEED, as reflected in the number of points (thirty-five) available.

To earn a majority of those points (nineteen to be exact), projects have to show a reduction in predicted energy use based on whole building computer simulations. This course will focus on ways technological tools, such as Building Information Modeling and Geographic Information Systems, can help achieve sustainable credit goals using model simulation.

Learning Objectives

    * Understand the origins of the Energy and Atmosphere category of LEED within the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System for buildings

    * Differentiate between LEED version 3.0 and previous Energy and Atmosphere LEED Credit Rating Systems

    * Recognize the importance of meeting the three prerequisites to the Energy and Atmosphere category of LEED

    * Identify criteria to best reach Energy and Atmosphere credit rating goals

    * Recognize the benefits of using Building Information Modeling and Geographic Information Systems for environmental considerations for Energy and Atmosphere LEED credits
