Good highways are so interwoven with every phase of our daily activities that it is almost impossible to imagine what life would be like without them. Before a highway is opened to traffic, careful thought must be given to conveying to drivers clear and concise information concerning its proper and safe use. Such information is given primarily by traffic control devices. The devices may be placed on, over, or adjacent to a street or highway and are intended to regulate, warn, or guide traffic.
This 1-hour interactive online course examines ways in which traffic engineers promote operational efficiency and safety through the use of traffic control devices. This area encompasses signs, markings, signals, islands, work-zone traffic control, traffic control for school areas, traffic control systems for railroad-highway grade crossings, and traffic control for bicycle facilities. This is the fifth course in a series on highway engineering.
