Biography
Richard Manning
With 30 years’ experience as a professional architect, Richard brings an expert understanding of
the design and construction process. Over the last decade he has advised on a broad range of
projects in the United States, Canada, Japan, China, and Qatar. Richard has overseen the successful
certification effort of numerous projects representing each of the USGBC LEED® Rating System
categories.
At GBS, Richard has directed the green building efforts for higher-education, institutional and
government projects at the local, state and federal level. Richard demonstrates a unique ability to
foster communication and develop a smooth working dynamic among project team members.
Under his direction, project teams work collectively to pursue high-performance design strategies
along the most appropriate path relative to their construction budget and schedule. Richard
regularly conducts training and workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada on sustainable design
and green construction specifications. He facilitates eco-charrettes to help project teams identify
opportunities for creating high-performance buildings. He is currently overseeing sustainability
efforts for a project in Qatar involving nearly 100 buildings.
Matthew Hyder
An integral member of the engineering team, Matthew provides technical support for energy
modeling projects, ASHRAE compliant energy studies and ventilation calculations, and establishing
building energy performance baselines using the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool. A LEED
Green Associate and WELL AP with over a year’s professional experience in the green building
industry, he comes to GBS with an education in Engineering Management and Sustainable Design.
Matthew is knowledgeable in all aspects of project management, sustainability, and energy
modeling/simulations, with key skills in research and analysis, construction methods and
documentation, and environmental issues and solutions. He uses eQuest for energy modeling at
GBS, and is also adept with software systems such as BEopt™ (Building Energy Optimization) to
evaluate residential building designs and identify cost-optimal efficiency packages at various levels
of whole-house energy savings along the path to zero net energy. His Master’s thesis at University
of Florida, Affordability of Net Zero Housing in Different Climates, compared the cost of net zero
housing in four major climate types in the U.S. Matthew is committed to furthering the goals of
LEED and the WELL Building Standard.
