On May 19, 1997, on the Lawn of the University of Virginia a tragic incident occurred: a suspended, second-floor porch that was attached to one of the original Jeffersonian pavilions collapsed. Twenty-three people were injured, one of whom died of her injuries. The structural element that failed was allegedly 175 years old at the time of the failure. The many lessons that can be learned from this incident and others are described throughout this course.
This 4-hour interactive online course introduces you to the structural systems of building pathology. The course focuses on the materials pathology associated with structural systems, including sections on differential deformations, crack formations, mechanical mechanisms, and biological mechanisms, and systemic pathology.
This course includes a multiple-choice test at the end of each section.
