This course is designed to provide an applicable working awareness in identifying the hazards of working on or near electrical circuits, conductors, or equipment and the minimum level of safe work practices necessary to protect a person from these hazards. The course is based on the safe work practices documented in the 2015 NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S, and OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K. It is the intention of the course to provide a substantial understanding of the primary electrical hazards, typical safe work practices that should be applied when working on or near the hazards, and a systematic method for determining and selecting the correct PPE based on the type and level of exposure.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Name and briefly describe the regulatory codes and standards governing workers’ electrical safety in the workplace;
• Define an electrically qualified person;
• Define an electrically unqualified person;
• Define incidental exposure;
• Name and describe the two primary hazards associated with working on or near electrical circuits, conductors, or equipment;
• Describe the characteristics of electrical shock including causes and potential effects on the human body;
• Describe the elements involved in an arc flash including short circuit current, overcurrent protective devices such as circuit breakers and fuses, and incident energy;
• Describe and determine the safe approach boundaries for shock and arc flash;
• Determine the PPE necessary for protecting against shock and arc flash;
• Apply basic safe practices when working on or near electrical circuits, conductors, or equipment;
• Define and establish an electrically safe work practice
