Channels designed to carry water must be designed to resist the forces of the flowing water. The use of concrete to line all water-carrying channels is not practical, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally acceptable, or good engineering practice. This 2-hour interactive online course is the first of a two-part series and provides an introduction into lining for channels, including design concepts and a general design procedure. It is strongly recommended that the first part be taken prior to taking the second part. Details on the types of linings are provided in Part 2 of the course. The text of the course is taken from the Federal Highway Administration’s circular on Design of Roadside Channels. Note that most of the equations are in metric and English units.
