Course Description
Soils issues and ineffective water management methods create serious problems with foundation systems and structures. Understanding the core soil problems faced in the construction industry and methods to overcome them allow you to avoid the associated issues.
 
This interactive online course will teach you about some of the most common issues found with soils and how to overcome them. You will also learn about ICC codes that govern site inspections. Additionally, you will learn about geotech reports and best practices when assessing soil conditions.

One of the best, most educational courses I have taken on Red Vector. Clear communication. There is an error on one of the checkpoints, and question 8 is poorly worded and is probably missed by a lot of people. The way it is worded means at least 3 of the choices are correct answers. Double negatives are confusing.

Cool! A series of videos. Kind of a refreshing addition for RedV. This one won't take you much more than the rated amount of time. (Yay!) You'll want good set of auxiliary speakers or headphones, to turn the volume up to normal. It's fine after that. Lots of good experience regarding staying out of trouble with soils. Very real world. If you want more of the science of Geotech and soils design he leaves you with some great links at the end. I copied and saved them. They look great. Has an obvious enthusiasm for the subject. Videos are well done. In a couple of spots it seems like the pictures you're seeing aren't what he's describing and that may be right, but overall this one is worth watching.

This is better than other courses in RedVector where most of the photographs have no specific connection to the point being made. I felt that the high level of experience that the lecturer had was key to the value of the advise that he offered.

The course discussion was much too general to be of much use to a design professional (architect or engineer). It would not be a much use to an experienced contractor either. Also, the challenges of soil conditions are much different here in Southeast Florida than on the northwest coast of California - the presenter didn't mention mucky soils, which are common here, or our limestone substrates. And we cannot discharge run-off from private property into the adjacent public storm sewers.
