As a critical part of the thermal envelope of buildings, roofing systems are subject to a number of important code requirements to assure public safety and energy efficiency. For both beginning as well as experienced design professionals, the plethora of code requirements can be complicated and confusing. How much roof insulation do I need and where should it be placed? Do I need an air barrier or a vapor retarder? Is the color of the roof important? If I install a new roof on an old building, does the roof need to meet the latest energy code? To help answer these and many more important questions, this webinar cuts through the confusion of modern commercial building codes and provides you with a straightforward and understandable approach to code-compliant roofing.

 

The webinar starts with a brief introduction to how commercial building codes are developed in the United States and how you can determine which specific local codes affect your design practice. Next, the webinar provides a detailed review of the critical energy-related provisions of current building codes that involve roofing, including minimum insulation levels, the need for air and vapor barriers, and emerging requirements for “cool” roofs. The lesson also provides detailed information about how to meet the requirements of current energy codes when re-roofing existing buildings. Finally, the lesson identifies free online resources to help you access important code information.

Course Objectives

  • Review the basic structure of energy codes in the United States and how specific codes are established by state and local jurisdictions to keep building occupants safe. 

  • Locate available online tools that can be used to determine the applicable energy code for specific states and cities in the U.S. 

  • Review and identify the key energy code requirements for commercial roofs that will ensure public health, safety, and welfare, including thermal insulation levels, use of air and vapor barriers, and use of "cool" roofing systems and surfaces. 

  • Review how roof energy code requirements are applied both for roofs on new buildings as well as existing buildings. 

  • Determine whether the application of a roof on an existing building is considered by the code to be "re-roofing" or "recovery," and identify the specific safety requirements for these different applications. 

  • Review some current online resources and guides available to calculate the level of roof insulation required, to examine the need for air and vapor barriers, and to identify the "cool" roof options for different roofs in different code jurisdictions.


SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: James Hoff
Jim Hoff is an experienced executive and consultant in the building materials industry. Jim currently serves as President of TEGNOS Research, Inc. a consulting organization dedicated to expanding understanding of the building envelope. Since the founding of TEGNOS, Dr. Hoff has provided a wide variety of strategic and technical consulting services to dozens of governmental, non-profit and corporate organizations, and recent clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U. S. EPA, building material trade associations, building materials manufacturers, building envelope designers and private equity firms. In addition to his industry research and consulting activity, Dr. Hoff also serves as the instructor for the successful "Commercial Roofing Boot Camp" course co-sponsored by Building Envelope Magazine. Jim has published numerous papers addressing a variety of technical and business topics germane to the building envelope industry and is a frequent speaker at building envelope, sustainability, and energy efficiency conferences.
