On May 19, 1997, on the Lawn of the University of Virginia a tragic incident occurred: a suspended, second-floor porch that was attached to one of the original Jeffersonian pavilions collapsed. Twenty-three people were injured, one of whom died of her injuries. The structural element that failed was allegedly 175 years old at the time of the failure. The many lessons that can be learned from this incident and others are described throughout this course.
This 2-hour interactive online course introduces you to some superstructures associated with common structural elements, including sections on Compression Elements, Columns, Walls, and Tension Elements.
This course includes a multiple-choice test at the end of each section.
