Roofing - Flexible Membrane Wind Load Design
Flexible membrane roofing materials are one of the more common types of roofing materials and probably the most common type for commercial structures. One of the important design considerations for a roof is the wind loading. This 2-hour interactive online course provides a design guide for low sloped flexible membrane roofing systems. It also includes several design examples that go through the entire design process for wind loading. This course includes a test at the end.

Upon completion of this course, you will understand:
- how to estimate design wind speed based on geographical areas
- the different areas of the roof that must be analyzed for wind loading, including the perimeter, corners, ridge and field
- the four different categories of building exposure which are influenced by the terrain surrounding a building
- how wind loading changes during the construction process and how to include these factors into the design
- how to compute uplift pressure from wind and how to use the standard tables from the Single-Ply Roofing Institute
- how to extrapolate known test information to apply to a situation that does not fit the test data

Mr. Peterson has a BS and MS from Montana State University and more than 28 years of engineering experience in hydrology and hydraulics. He is currently a senior engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson and has worked extensively in both the private sector and in state government. He is licensed as a PE in MN, MT, ND, SD and WY. He was chairman of a three-person committee that re-wrote the Hydraulics Manual for the Montana Department of Transportation and authored the storm water regulations for subdivisions in Montana. He also teaches a two-day course on Introduction to Detention Pond Design for the American Society of Civil Engineers throughout the U.S.

The examples were good, but a majority of the images used did not apply to either the slide they were on or the course in general. For example there were images of shingled roofs, standing seam metal, etc. that have nothing to do with this course. It's like the author just wanted a diagram or picture of a roof but this course is on low slope flexible membranes. The examples could have had diagrams or images to better illustrate how the fasteners should be laid out or the other design criteria they were calculating.
