A versatile electrical test instrument is the multimeter, which combines the functions of a voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter into one device. This 2-hour interactive online course covers the basics of digital multimeters including the theory of operation, and introduces some of the factors that influence the design and operation of a multimeter. The theory of operation of multimeters is explored from the perspective of analog meter movements.
Issues affecting the operation of a digital multimeter such as resolution, accuracy, and waveform impacts are discussed. The appropriate IEC safety standards are presented, which allow users to select the appropriate meter for their application. This course is the first in a series of courses about digital multimeters.
After taking this course you will:
- Understand the operation of analog meter movements.
- Know how meter movements measure volts, ohms, and amps.
- Understand how the resolution, accuracy, and waveform shape influence how the values are represented and displayed.
- Be familiar with the markings and terminology used on digital multimeters.
- Know how to select the appropriate digital multimeter based on IEC standards.
The course includes a multiple-choice test to gage your understanding of the material.
