3 Amazing U.S. Parking Lots

When you think “great design,” parking lots might not be high on the list. But if you’ve ever tried to navigate a poorly designed parking area, you may have come to appreciate the importance of their planning and design.

Not every parking lot is an endless maze, however. In fact, some of them are so well-designed you won’t want to leave. Here are three examples of amazing parking lots from around the country.

  1. EPA Experimental Parking Lot, Edison, New Jersey

This nondescript parking lot appears to be innovation-free, but don’t be so quick to judge. Complex magazine explained that this parking lot was specially designed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency using three revolutionary materials. Within the lot, 41 spaces are designated on porous concrete, 28 are on porous asphalt and 28 are on concrete paver blocks. The source explained that these surfaces were created to absorb water, which means this lot won’t get clogged with buildup during inclement weather.

The parking lot at this luxury resort is just as cutting-edge as its high-end accommodations. The Washington Post reported that visitors to the Phoenician park their vehicles beneath an array of 2,000 solar panels, which amount to almost 600 kilowatts. The source explained that businesses who choose to construct these types of lots can use the solar energy they produce to power other aspects of their operations.

  1. Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Baltimore, Maryland

The idea of an efficient and well-designed airport parking lot may sound like a myth, but it exists at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. According to Complex magazine, this spot actually has a neon sign that state “Follow Green Arrows To Vacant Spaces.” Drivers simply go where the sign points them, park and head to their terminals. Gone are the days of arriving at the airport hours ahead of time to secure parking – you know you’ll be able to find a spot in no time with this convenient system.parking-lot-CTA
