Builders Must Become More Aware of Land Development Processes and Requirements

In 2015, an IBISWorld study of land development revenues for the previous five years reported sharp declines for the sector. These declines came despite renewed momentum for construction projects in the post-recession economy. The land development problem was not a lack of projects to develop, but a transition in the industry. Dedicated land development firms were increasingly competing with construction companies that were handling land development on their own, a trend that is only likely to grow moving forward.

As tasks traditionally set aside for dedicated land developers begin to find their way into the construction industry, builders will face significant pressure to ramp up their internal education efforts to get up to speed. Builders must understand national, state and local regulations to get proposals passed, learn how to make the best use of land to be developed, plan earthwork (efficient grading design), and ensure and design infrastructure that can support it.
