This 1-hour interactive online course introduces the Bipolar Transistor. It describes the operation of the device in a non-mathematical way, followed by an overview of transistor biasing, and collector curves.
The course presented here is a part of a series of courses on the subject of Transistors, Diodes and Op Amps. This course assumes that the user has the knowledge presented in the previous courses in the series, or has obtained sufficient background elsewhere. It is also assumed that the user has a good working knowledge of circuit theory including Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Laws Thevenin's Theorem, and Norton's Theorem. This background can be obtained from the appropriate parts of the course titled "Circuit Analysis: AC" that is also available from RedVector. For those who just need to "brush up" on circuit theory, the course titled "Circuit Analysis Review" is suggested.
There are generally two ways to use this series: A user may start at the beginning and work through the entire series, or he may simply choose parts of the series to either refresh his knowledge or to selectively obtain new knowledge.
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Understand and use the schematic symbol for the transistor
- Be able to understand current flow through a transistor
- Know the meaning of and be able to use the terms "Base, Emitter, and Collector."
- Know the meaning of "biasing a transistor"
- Understand the transistor Collector Curve diagram
- Understand the use of the four major transistor regions - Active, Breakdown, Saturation, and Cutoff
