This practical 1-hour course will acquaint the student with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology. A PCB provides a means to 'mount' and 'interconnect' electronic components. Designing and manufacturing PCBs is a complicated endeavor with many opportunities for innovations as well as mistakes. Since products are constantly becoming more electronic in nature, it is likely more and more applications will require PCBs. Therefore, it is beneficial for engineers of all disciplines to be acquainted with the basics of PCBs.

There will be a quiz at the end of this course.

Course Objectives

After taking the course, the student should know the following:

  • PCB Architecture
  • PCB Terminology
  • What determines how many layers are in the design.
  • What factors determine how big the conductive traces are and how to determine the proper size.
  • How the conductive layers are connected.
  • Types of finishes commonly available.
  • What PCB 'panelization' is.
  • What is PCB layout software and what will it do?
  • What the PCB manufacturer needs to produce a design.
  • What affects the cost of a PCB.
