The sixth fundamental canon of the Code of Ethics published by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) states, "Engineers shall conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession." These are certainly lofty goals, but we must understand that engineers solve important problems that have a direct impact on the safety of many people. People who trust the engineer to act in precisely these ways: honorable, responsible, etc. We will explore these goals, and explain the impact of the engineering profession in the world, through case studies and practical recommendations to hold paramount the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
