In the U.S. alone, there are 1.2 million miles of sewer pipe and approximately 880,000 miles of water distribution pipes. In both cases, the operable life of the infrastructure is 50 to 100 years. The majority of these pipes were laid in the 1940''s, after World War II, and most are 50 to 125 years old.
