Modern Shale Gas Development

Modern Shale Gas Development

3 hrs. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-10532

SME: Denise Waite, PG

The course provides an overview of modern shale gas development, as well as a summary of federal, state, and local regulations applicable to the natural gas production industry, and describes environmental considerations related to shale gas development. It describes the importance of shale gas in meeting the future energy needs of the United States including its role in alternative energy strategies and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The course is intended to serve as a technical summary document, including geologic information on the shale gas basins in the U.S. and the methods of shale gas development. By providing an overview of the regulatory framework and the environmental considerations associated with shale gas development, it will also help facilitate the minimization and mitigation of adverse environmental impacts. By so doing, the course can serve as an instrument to facilitate informed public discussions.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Summarize natural gas and its role in the US
  • Describe shale gas production and its elements
  • Match the shale types to their regional locations
  • Explain and identify the federal and local environmental laws and regulations governing shale gas production
  • Identify and list the various elements of water, air, and land quality regulations that apply to shale gas development
  • Define and explain a split estate and the impact it has on shale gas production
  • Describe and identify horizontal drilling and its elements
  • Select the techniques and processes that can be implemented to reduce shale gas production impacts on the environment
  • Describe a casing and cementing program
  • Identify the alternatives for drilling fluids in urban settings
  • Explain and identify hydraulic fracturing, design, and process
  • Summarize the consideration for air quality, water management and treatment associated with shale gas production
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Denise Waite, PG
