Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the philosophy behind Green Design and its impact on community health and well-being
- Discuss the codes of ethics recognized by the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, American Society of Landscape Architects, and the National Society of Professional Engineers, focusing on community welfare and safety
- Identify how ethical and professional responsibilities extend to the natural environment and contribute to community welfare
- Discuss emerging environmental issues, such as population growth, climate change, water scarcity, and species extinction, and their effects on community health
- Identify the types of standards, metrics, and assessments that are needed for green design
- Discuss clients' roles in determining the ethical use of green design to enhance community sustainability and safety
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: James Sipes
Jim Sipes is an award-winning urban designer, environmental planner, landscape architect, and writer with more than thirty years of experience. His design solutions focus on taking an integrated approach to water resources and green infrastructure. He has written more than a dozen books, including Creating Green Roadways (Island Press), and has written approximately 400 articles over the years. He is the founding principal of Sand County Studios and is a Visiting Professor at Penn State University. He is a Certified Landscape Architect and is registered in several states.
