The method of least squares is a powerful tool when used with intelligence and understanding.  It is a way of coming up with information from approximate answers to difficult questions in the area of data analysis.  The method in its various forms is used in business, finance, banking, engineering, and any other endeavors where data has to be trended, analyzed, or otherwise processed.

This 3-hour interactive online course is part one of a two part series and is a presentation of the “pieces and parts” needed to understand the method of least squares.  It is needed in order to make sense of the curve fitting with linear functions, exponential functions, and power functions.  We start out the journey with “Quadratic function minimum – method of least squares – theorem 1.”  The course progresses through arithmetic mean definition, variance definition, and standard deviation - theorems and definitions.  The course also covers origin transform, a device used to simplify data manipulation.  The solution of systems of equations in the sense of least squares is derived and illustrated with examples.
Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will have a better understanding of concepts such as:

  • Arithmetic mean and standard deviation
  • Approximation in the sense of least squares
  • Sigma Notation
  • Translation of the Origin
  • Least square Solution of Systems of Linear Equations

Patrick Green is a professional engineer registered in three states, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. He holds degrees from the U. S. Naval Academy and the University of Florida.

After serving in the U. S. Navy, he left to gain a Mechanical Engineering degree. His experience includes working in the shipbuilding industry at Newport News Shipbuilding, fire control test engineering on a Polaris missile submarine and assisting in the planning of installation of The Nuclear Carrier power plant construction for the USS Nimitz.

He began his career in the electric utility industry working on computerized planning and scheduling for power plant construction. He gained considerable experience in pre-operational and start up testing at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Station, near Augusta, Georgia. Towards the end of his career, he performed operational audits as a certified lead auditor and as an Independent Safety Engineer. He is now retired, but has a continued interest in all things engineering.
