Steam Turbine Power

Steam Turbine Power

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-11153

SME: John White, P.E.

This course has been discontinued.

Do you know how the steam turbine is such a vast improvement over the reciprocating steam engine? This 1-hour interactive, online course describes the basic principles of steam turbines. Vector diagrams are used to explain the dynamics involved in impulse and reaction turbine stages. Several pictorial presentations are included, which clearly illustrate the various stages and turbine configurations. Also, classifications by stage design, steam supply and exhaust conditions, casing and shaft arrangement, direction of steam flow, and numbers of exhaust stages are presented and described.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify the components of a steam turbine and their function and name the two main types of turbines
  • Describe how to maintain constant steam velocity through the turbine
  • Label the main parts of a steam turbine
  • State the purpose of aerodynamic blades for steam turbine operation and name the two primary blade types in use with steam turbines
  • Identify the factors that limit the theoretical maximum power of a turbine
  • Describe how to control pressure drop in modern steam turbines
