The best intentions of the architect or engineer will not produce a masterpiece unless the workmanship is of the highest order and the field practices are as exacting and competent as the detailing. This 4-hour online course covers the installation and workmanship of masonry products.

This course is divided into five sections:

  • Moisture Resistance & Preparation of Materials
  • Installation: Part I
  • Installation: Part II
  • Prefabricated masonry & Construction Tolerances
  • Cold and Hot Weather Construction & Moist Curing
Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Discover the precision and skills utilized in the practice of construction -- including preparation of materials and installation.
  • Understand how techniques for prefabricating brick masonry reduce on-site labor.
  • Know how the construction industry develops its own standards for acceptable tolerances based on economic considerations of what is reasonable and cost effective.
  • Have learned about hot and cold weather construction practices and discover how moist curing methods can help prevent masonry dryouts, which is always a concern during hot and cold weather construction.

Existing industry information has been assembled and correlated into a single, concise, and complete reference. Two sources used in the development of this course have been publications of the Brick Institute of America and the National Concrete Association, especially the BIA ''Technical Notes'' series and the NCMA ''TEK Bulletins.''

You will find a bibliography of detailed sources as well as other downloadable PDF files on the Reference Materials page of each scenario, all of which require Adobe Acrobat to open.
