The importance of using water effectively in buildings is increasingly recognized by owners, occupants, consultants, and officials. One sign for that is the important change to the water efficiency section in the LEED® rating system. LEED 2009® introduced a prerequisite for “water use reduction” and doubled the possible points that can be obtained in the “water efficiency” section of the system. As a professional in the building industry, you need to keep up with these important developments.
 
This interactive online course provides you with the necessary background to be an effective participant in the development of sustainable water systems in buildings. By the end of the course, you will recognize the many functions that water plays in a building. You will be resourceful enough to select among many non-traditional options for water sources, and you will be able to draft a strategy to achieve water efficiency in a building project. You will recognize how to reduce water demand, optimize the design and operation of the water system, and minimize both the required and released water. You will be able to identify several available technologies that support you in making important design decisions. Finally, considerable part of the course is dedicated to the calculations needed to achieve the prerequisite and to gain points in the water efficiency section of the LEED 2009® rating system. Several case studies from around the world are shown to capture the experiences of others as they try to achieve sustainable water systems in buildings.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
  • Classify the roles played by water within buildings and recognize the potential for water saving in each role.
  • Identify diverse water sources to serve buildings, discuss the suitability of each source to the role played by water, and recognize the possibility to conserve resources by the appropriate selection of the source.
  • Select appropriate components of a sustainable water system in a building following detailed strategies that aim to reduce water demand, optimize operation of the water system, and minimize both acquired and released water.
  • Identify the number of water efficiency LEED points a building can earn using the detailed calculations recognized by LEED Green Building Rating System.
