Driven Piles: Introduction to Static Analysis Methods

Driven Piles: Introduction to Static Analysis Methods

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Advanced

Item#: RV-7674

SME: Mark Peterson, P.E., M.ASCE

This course has been discontinued.

Driven piles are a dependable and cost effective deep foundation solution to maintain the integrity of structures. Produced as long columns of steel, timber, or concrete, they provide additional support to structures on land and over water, especially during natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes. Testing of installed piles can determine the load carrying capabilities of the pile, ensuring the strength and stability of the foundation before construction begins.

This 1-hour interactive online course is the third of a series of courses on driven piles. This course covers an introduction to static analysis methods, including basics of static analysis, events during and after pile driving, load transfer, effective overburden pressure, selection of design soil strength parameters and factors of safety. Other courses cover design of single piles and design of pile groups. It is based on guidance provided by the Federal Highway Administration.

Vector Solutions has a long history of providing industry-specific content for its customers. While this course and its content remain accurate and functional within our systems, the look and feel may not match our more modern offerings.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will understand:

  • The basics of static analysis including situations where two static analyses are necessary
  • How different types of soil are disturbed during pile driving operations and how these changes impact temporary and permanent soil conditions
  • How load is transferred from the piles to the adjacent soil
  • How to compute the effective overburden pressure
  • The considerations in selection of design soil strength parameters
  • The factors involved in selection of a factor of safety for allowable pile soil resistance

Mr. Peterson has a BS and MS from Montana State University and more than 28 years of engineering experience in hydrology and hydraulics. He is currently a senior engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson and has worked extensively in both the private sector and in state government. He is licensed as a PE in MN, MT, ND, SD and WY. He was chairman of a three-person committee that re-wrote the Hydraulics Manual for the Montana Department of Transportation and authored the storm water regulations for subdivisions in Montana. He also teaches a two-day course on Introduction to Detention Pond Design for the American Society of Civil Engineers throughout the U.S.
