Poor posture, typically defined as having excessive curvatures of the spine, slumped shoulders and a forward projecting chin, are common ailments in today's society. Improper posture inhibits proper breathing patterns by limiting the room the diaphragm has to push down into the abdomen to make room for the lungs.
And breathing is one of the basic requirements of life; it is the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing upon death. Each minute, the average person breathes 12 times, inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. These processes are controlled by the autonomic nervous system and unless you are actively listening to or watching for breathing, you are essentially unaware of it.
