Microgrids and the City

Microgrids and the City

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-10984AW

SME: Aaron Snyder, Ph.D.

This course will be discontinued on 01/08/2024

Is your municipality prepared for a loss of power for days, or even weeks? The use of backup generators is really a short-term solution that only addresses one aspect of loss of power - what about the rest? Wireless communications? Clean water? Gasoline/diesel? Medicines? A holistic approach to energy from up front and ongoing efficiency, minimizing demand, and designing, building, and operating long-term outage solutions is within the grasp of all municipalities. This presentation will examine energy resiliency resources and provide two case-study examples of the application of those resources.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify limitations of a resilient system when performing an "as-is" assessment so as not to disrupt life safety, restoration effectiveness, and socio-economic continuity during a major event
  • Prioritize investment decisions for improving resiliency
  • Describe how managing energy, transportation fuels supply, communications, and societal needs (water, sewer, medicines) are interdependent
  • Apply a recognized analytical framework to address the problem of energy assurance
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Aaron Snyder, Ph.D.
Aaron’s technical expertise includes advanced metering infrastructure requirements analysis, electricity metering, electricity metering standards (domestic and international), demand response, and power system wide-area stability and control. Aaron has assisted utilities with developing and executing electricity metering test plans and procedures, particularly for the case of suspected failures, and including the supervision of vendor personnel performing the tests. He has also assisted with developing requests for proposals (RFPs) and evaluating proposals against those RFPs as part of AMI procurement activities. Aaron worked with vendors and utilities to develop and implement an AMI test bed focused on communications networking performance and interoperability. Aaron was the deputy project manager for the EnerNex team contracted through NIST in support of the Smart Grid interoperability standards development and harmonization project. His primary technical role in the project was standards acceleration and development, particularly standards relating to electricity metering and related information exchange.
