Design of Buildings Using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)

Design of Buildings Using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Advanced

Item#: RV-10824

SME: Rob Oleck

This course has been discontinued.

This course is intended to present a comparison of engineering analysis approaches to the design of building structures for Insulated Concrete Forms. The course covers the Prescriptive Method (developed by HUD through PCA) and the two appropriate sections of the 2011 ACI code for walls. A simple, 2-story house with a basement is used as an example to demonstrate the application of both of these methods for a 6 inch thick waffle-slab and a flat panel ICF wall.
Course Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the limitations of the Prescriptive Method and the ACI code for design of ICF wall structural systems
  • Identify the different types of ICF wall systems
  • Recognize the allowable capacity of an ICF wall system
  • Define the deflection and reinforcement for an ICF wall system

Dr. Oleck is an independent consulting structural engineer living in Orlando, Florida. He is presently involved in the structural analysis and design of various building structures in and around the Florida area, including hotels, apartment buildings, industrial structures, naval facilities, and specialty structures for the amusement parks. Other past experience includes the analysis and design of various nuclear and hydro-electric power structures including reinforced concrete and earthen dams, and many special nuclear power plant structures.
Dr. Oleck has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at Syracuse University, where he earned his Ph.D., teaching Engineering Mechanics, Reinforced Concrete Design, and Seismic Analysis and Design. He has also published many technical papers in the fields of structural dynamics, seismic analysis, soil-structure-interaction and design of structures using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF).
