This three interactive hour online course will provide the user with a background of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Studies (FIS). It provides the land surveyor, engineer or other user with a comprehensive overview of topics including:
  • Flood studies and map terminology
  • How flood studies are prepared along riverine and coastal floodplains
  • Basic floodplain hydrology and hydraulics
  • Types of FEMA flood maps
  • FIRM zones, reference marks, map features, etc.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Use and understand common terminology
  • Recognize the various types of floodplain maps and understand their uses
  • Use a Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report
  • Understand reference marks and datums
  • Know how riverine and coastal flood maps are developed
  • Know what a 100-year flood is
  • Understand how to apply the FIRM information to property

Mr. Tingle is a Professional Geologist and a Certified Floodplain Manager. He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Geography and Earth Sciences. He has 15 years experience in floodplain management at the local government level and is the Chairman of the North Carolina Association of Floodplain Managers. Bill has worked closely with FEMA staff on various floodplain issues and is a member of the Association of State Floodplain Managers where he serves on a variety of committees. He has authored numerous papers on floodplain management.
