This 2-hour interactive online course provides an overview of flooding, floodplain management, and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Floodplain management is a process followed to develop the best mix of strategies and tools to reduce flood losses and protect natural resources and their functions. The first unit of this course describes the more common types of floods and floodplains as well as the evolution of strategies and tools for floodplain management. The second unit of this course provides an introduction to the National Flood Insurance Program, including its purpose and how it works. It describes the roles of the state and local partners, how communities participate, and their responsibilities to remain eligible to participate in the program.

There will be a test included at the end of this course.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will have a comprehensive knowledge of the following:

  • Describe the more common types of floods and floodplains.
  • Illustrate the evolution of strategies and tools for floodplain management.
  • Explain the purpose and functioning of the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • List the roles of the state and local partners, how communities participate, and their responsibilities to remain eligible to participate in the program.
  • State the roles and responsibility of the local administrator of floodplain management.

Mr. Tingle is a Professional Geologist and a Certified Floodplain Manager. He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Geography and Earth Sciences. He has 15 years experience in floodplain management at the local government level and is the Chairman of the North Carolina Association of Floodplain Managers. Bill has worked closely with FEMA staff on various floodplain issues and is a member of the Association of State Floodplain Managers where he serves on a variety of committees. He has authored numerous papers on floodplain management.
