Cryogenics is the science related to the production and effects of very low temperatures. There is not an official temperature cutoff, but a boiling point below -238 °F (-150 °C) is a common definition for cryogenic liquids (cryogens). Below this temperature, common gases such as helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, argon, oxygen, and methane are all liquids. Working with liquids at these extremely low temperatures poses some obvious hazards. In this course, we will discuss those hazards and how to work safely with cryogenic liquids.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • List and describe the properties and hazards associated with cryogens
  • Describe engineering controls and appropriate PPE for mitigating those hazards
  • List approved materials for cryogenic equipment
  • Describe the different types of cryogenic containers
  • Describe safe storage and handling procedures
  • Describe how to safely transfer between containers
  • List important housekeeping and emergency response procedures
