By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Describe the primary components and structural behavior of pier and beam foundation systems
• Identify site conditions that affect pier and beam foundation design, including soil bearing, flood elevation, wind exposure, frost depth, drainage, corrosion exposure, and access
• Explain how ASCE 7, ASCE 24, the IBC, the IRC, TMS 402/602, FEMA guidance, and local floodplain requirements influence foundation design decisions
• Recognize the importance of a continuous load path for gravity, uplift, lateral, shear, sliding, and overturning forces
• Compare common pier and foundation materials, including masonry, reinforced concrete, treated wood, steel, and proprietary systems
• Identify common performance problems, including weak connections, inadequate reinforcement, poor footing support, scour, corrosion, decay, and incomplete inspection
• Determine when a pier and beam foundation may not be appropriate and when alternatives should be considered
