Constructed wetlands can be used as artificial wastewater treatment systems. There are many design factors which affect the effluent quality from a free water surface constructed wetland. This 3-hour online course covers the consideration of some of these factors that can significantly reduce the effluent variation. It also provides a brief summary of expected wetland treatment performance, describes issues that are important in the design and layout of a free water surface wetland, and includes several design examples. Construction issues unique to constructed wetlands are also discussed. Additional Red Vector courses are available on other topics related to constructed wetlands. This course is based on guidance documents published by the Environmental Protection Agency.

This course includes a multiple-choice quiz after each section to test your understanding of the material.
Vector Solutions has a long history of providing industry-specific content for its customers. While this course and its content remain accurate and functional within our systems, the look and feel may not match our more modern offerings.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you will:

  • Understand the performance expectations of a free water surface wetland, including expectations for BOD, TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus, fecal coliforms and metals
  • Understand the hydrology of a free water surface wetland, including wastewater inflow and outflow, runoff, evapotranspiration and infiltration losses
  • Understand the basics of hydraulics for a free water surface wetland
  • Understand the rationale for wetland system design and sizing
  • Understand the factors that influence wetland system design
  • Understand the components of a free water surface wetland system

Mr. Peterson has a BS and MS from Montana State University and more than 28 years of engineering experience in hydrology and hydraulics. He is currently a senior engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson and has worked extensively in both the private sector and in state government. He is licensed as a PE in MN, MT, ND, SD and WY. He was chairman of a three-person committee that re-wrote the Hydraulics Manual for the Montana Department of Transportation and authored the storm water regulations for subdivisions in Montana. He also teaches a two-day course on Introduction to Detention Pond Design for the American Society of Civil Engineers throughout the U.S.
