This course provides a focused review of 2026 National Electrical Code changes affecting specialized occupancies, hazardous locations, health care facilities, fuel dispensing facilities, marina and boatyard installations, life safety systems, standby systems, fire pumps, and fire alarm systems. Learners will examine requirements for Class I location boundary seals, emergency disconnects at fuel dispensing facilities, optional power sources and ground-fault protection in health care facilities, surge protection for mobile and manufactured homes, and electrical safety requirements for marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and docking facilities.

The course also covers NEC provisions for emergency systems, legally required standby systems, optional standby systems, fire pump installations, and fire alarm systems. Topics include fire pump feeder circuit protection, emergency system switching means, transfer switch bypass and isolation requirements, emergency feeder fire protection, Class 2 and Class 4 lighting allowances, interconnection equipment, surge protection for standby systems, optional standby systems supplied by multimode inverters, and surge protective devices for fire alarm control panels.

Course Objectives
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Explain boundary seal requirements for Class I locations and emergency disconnect rules for fuel dispensing facilities.

Describe optional power source capacity, GFPE, GFCI protection, and Article 700 application requirements for health care facilities.

Identify surge protection requirements for mobile and manufactured homes.

Apply marina, boatyard, floating building, and docking facility requirements related to pier distribution voltage, engineered design, bonding, receptacles, GFCI protection, and GFPE.

Describe fire pump requirements, including fire protection options for feeder circuits within buildings.

Explain emergency system requirements for permanent switching means, transfer switch bypass and isolation, feeder fire protection, interconnection equipment, and Class 2 and Class 4 lighting.

Identify legally required standby system requirements for transfer switch bypass and isolation and surge protection.

Describe optional standby system allowances for multimode inverters and surge protective device requirements for fire alarm control panels.

Ryan Jackson is a combination inspector in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. He began his career as a carpenter while in high school, and began doing electrical work at the age of 18. At the age of 23 Ryan landed his first job as an electrical inspector, and subsequently became certified in building, plumbing, and mechanical inspection, as well as building and electrical plan review. Two years after becoming an inspector, he was approached by a friend in the area asking him to fill in at an electrical seminar for him. After his first class he was hooked, and is now a highly sought after seminar instructor. Ryan has taught in several states, and loves helping people increase their understanding of the Code.

 

He has been involved in writing and editing over 25 books on the National Electrical Code, and has taught the subject in multiple states and for multiple colleges and universities. He is self-employed as an NEC® consultant and inspector.

 
When Ryan isn’t working, he can often be found in his garage turning wood on his lathe, in his basement exercising, or any quiet place where he can dive into a book. He is also a rabid University of Utah football fan. Ryan married his high school sweetheart, Sharie, and they have two beautiful children together: Kaitlynn and Aaron.
