Fire and smoke are the leading causes of death in buildings. Fire can spread rapidly within a building and, in some cases, from building to building. This interactive online course teaches you about the International Building Code and how it’s designed to limit the spread of fire inside and outside of buildings. You will learn about active and passive fire protection and the different ways buildings and occupants are protected from fire.

Developed in partnership with the International Code Council.

  • Describe how the International Building Code protects the structure and occupants from fire using passive and active fire protection
  • Identify any fire and smoke protection systems required
