In the past 10 years the United States has experienced an 80% increase in the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation and a 30% increase in pedestrians. While in contrast, there has only been a 5% increase in the use of motor vehicles. For this reason, more and more cities are developing robust bicycle and pedestrian transportation networks. One of the key elements being used is that of multi-use paths. Engineers, Architects, Contractors and other professionals from the A/E industry will gain core knowledge under this course for the planning and design of multi-use paths. This interactive online course will cover key guidelines from AASHTO, FHWA and NACTO in the development of multi-use paths, with a special emphasis in ADA elements, geometric requirements such as horizontal and vertical curvature design, and the adequate development of multi-use path crossings and roadway mid-block crossings.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
 
  • Incorporate the three key accessibility features in the design multi-use paths, that are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public.
  • Identify at least two key design elements for the development of multi-use paths.
  • Based on design criteria, select the adequate radius for a multi-use path curvature.
  • Based on design criteria, select the adequate length of crest and sag curves for multi-use paths.
  • Describe at least two different types of crossings within multi-use path designs.
  • Design mid-block crossings of multi-use paths using at least two key safety criteria.

Alfredo Cely, P.E., MSEM Photo

Alfredo is a Civil Engineer that has managed Transportation, Land Development, Water Resources and Aviation projects from planning to construction for the past 14 years. Most recently his consulting work has focused on assisting state and local agencies in improving the safety of our transportation network. He has been responsible for several multi-modal transportation projects in the Tampa Bay Area, throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a licensed Civil Engineer in Florida, North Carolina, and Ecuador.

 

At the University of South Florida, Alfredo serves as an instructor for the Transportation sections of the P.E. Preparation Courses hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Student Chapter. Alfredo is a member of ASCE’s Street and Highway Operations Committee and is an associate member of the Aviation Planning and Operations Committee. At the national level, Alfredo helps several of the Transportation Research Board Committees and is currently involved in the following committees: Low Volume Roads; Hydrology, Hydraulics and Water Quality; Pedestrian Safety; and Bicycle Transportation.

 

Alfredo served as the Chair of the local ASCE Transportation and Development Institute group during its first two years (2012-2014). The Florida West Coast Chapter of the ASCE has recognized Alfredo’s commitment to the profession and our community honoring him with the Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2014. As part of his involvement with the local engineering community, Alfredo currently serves as a Board Member of the Florida West Coast Branch for ASCE.

Overall, interesting. I did get a bit lost in all the "text" description of physical things where a graphic diagram would have been a huge help (protruding objects, curb ramps, intersections, blended transitions, etc.) I was also frustrated by the exam. The last class I took from this instructor, almost all the exam questions were addressed in the checks along the way. This time, only 13 of 22 were addressed at the checkpoints and for some of the others, I could not find the answers in the text, at least the information was not presented in the same terms as the text information and it was not obvious. I want to be sure about the information and not forced to guess. Also, the exam questions this time did not follow the order of the text and it was chaotic trying to dig the information out (especially when the way the question was asked did not correspond to what was presented in the text...).
