Part 1 of this 3-part course teaches you about surges so that you can understand what you are dealing with. This course will also introduce you to the types of protection available as well as installation recommendations.

 

Part 2 of this course teaches the basic principles of operation of pad-mounted transformers and switchgear, the types of equipment that are in common use, and how they are connected.

 

Part 3 teaches the basic kinds of information that can be obtained from various types of electrical system diagrams: one-line diagrams, plan-profile diagrams, framing diagrams, and GIS technology. The course shows how these diagrams are read and interpreted and how information can be used to complete an assignment. 

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:


·       Describe how surges are caused

·       Explain why you need to use surge protection

·       Name the different types of surge protection

·       Describe the characteristics, components, and general operation of a pad-mounted transformer

·       Describe an installation procedure for a three-phase pad-mounted transformer

·       Describe various problems that might be encountered when troubleshooting a three-phase pad-mounted transformer 

·       Explain how the troubleshooting process can be used to isolate the cause of a problem in a three-phase, pad-mounted transformer

·       Recognize and identify one-line diagrams, plan profile diagrams, framing diagrams and circuit diagrams

·       Recognize and identify the basic elements of one-line diagrams

·       Recognize and identify symbols and conventions used on plan profile diagrams and framing diagrams

·       Analyze geospatial data to locate and troubleshoot structure and line issues
