Driven piles are a total engineering solution. The design, installation and quality assurance that are a part of each driven pile combine to eliminate guesswork and produce a known, reliable and cost effective product that can accommodate a wide variety of subsurface conditions. This 2-hour interactive online course covers the many different types of piles available and explains the appropriate conditions for each type of pile. There is also a section covering the different types of degradation and how each pile substance might respond to these difficult environmental circumstances. The information is provided to help designers choose the best pile type for any given project. This course is based on guidance provided by the Federal Highway Administration.

Vector Solutions has a long history of providing industry-specific content for its customers. While this course and its content remain accurate and functional within our systems, the look and feel may not match our more modern offerings.
Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, you will:

  • Know more about the advantages and disadvantages of timber piles and how they are treated to increase their durability
  • Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of steel H piles and when corrosion might be a consideration
  • Know more about steel pipe piles and the various ways that the pipe opening can be used to increase capacity
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of prestressed concrete piles
  • Know more about reinforced concrete piles and the methods and problems associated with lengthening this type of pile
  • Understand the different types of cast in place concrete piles and the various casings that can be used
  • Know the different types of composite piles that may be available
  • Realize the many design considerations for piles in aggressive subsurface environments, including salt water, and the methods used to minimize the impacts of these conditions

This course includes a test at the end of each section to gauge your understanding of the material.
