Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete

Designing and Specifying Pervious Concrete

2 hrs. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-10873AW

SME: Brian Killingsworthm, P.E.

This two-hour webcast provides an overview on implementing pervious concrete pavements as a solution to reducing stormwater runoff from building sites and other paved areas. Participants will learn about pervious concrete pavement systems, engineering properties and construction techniques. The first hour discusses hydrologic and structural design of pervious concrete pavements. The second hour addresses the specifics that every specifier should consider when drafting pervious concrete specifications, with a focus on American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 522 Guide to Specification for Pervious Concrete. This webcast will help civil engineers, architects, landscape architects and public works officials understand the principles behind pervious concrete design. Contractors, product suppliers and land developers will also benefit from this webcast.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify the fundamental characteristics of pervious concrete.
  • Describe how to design pervious concrete mixtures in the laboratory for sufficient porosity for stormwater infiltration.
  • Compare and contrast the hydrologic and structural design requirements to reduce the environmental impact often associated with development.
  • Communicate the important aspects of constructing a pervious concrete pavement to reduce stormwater runoff volume, rate, and pollutants..
  • Describe how to maintain pervious concrete pavement so as not to weaken the concrete and endanger the public.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Brian Killingsworthm, P.E.

Brian M. Killingsworth, PE, is NRMCA's vice president, pavement structures. Based in San Antonio, TX, he had been in the consulting business for 19 years, acquiring a broad background in pavement design, materials, construction, and maintenance before joining NRMCA in June 2011.

In his role at NRMCA, Killingsworth provides technical support and education to member companies, affiliate associations, and local owners in all aspects of pavement engineering. Through this support, Killingsworth advances the applications and use of ready mixed concrete for streets, local roads and parking areas, including conventional concrete, concrete overlays, roller compacted concrete, and pervious concrete. He also represents NRMCA before federal, state, and local entities as well as other organizations that develop codes and standards for pavements and also provides input to sustainability standards for roads and transportation related infrastructure.

Over the first part of his career, Killingsworth was actively involved in several research projects with national and state entities. He then spent two years co-managing the QA materials testing laboratory for a large toll road project in Central Texas, overseeing lab testing of all construction materials placed on the project. Killingsworth then led a San Antonio-based consulting firm’s Pavement Services Group that provided horizontal design and construction-related services to both public and private entities. Kilingsworth is a professional engineer and holds both bachelor's and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Texas A&M University.
