On May 19, 1997, on the Lawn of the University of Virginia a tragic incident occurred: a suspended, second-floor porch that was attached to one of the original Jeffersonian pavilions collapsed. Twenty-three people were injured, one of whom died of her injuries. The structural element that failed was allegedly 175 years old at the time of the failure. The many lessons that can be learned from this incident and others are described throughout this course.

This 2-hour interactive online course introduces you to the science of building pathology and goes beyond boilerplate remedies to offer a more comprehensive and systematic approach to deterioration problems, diagnostics, and intervention.

This course includes a multiple-choice test at the end of each section.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Be able to define building pathology
  • Know how to interpret the signs and symptoms of the aging process in order to assess the condition of the structure
  • Be able to identify deterioration mechanisms
  • Know what is the function of the structural system
  • Be familiar with the role of the environmental modification system
  • Have reviewed some myths associated with modern materials
  • Be able to develop an intervention strategy
