This course will guide you through the essential requirements of the 2024 International Building Code (IBC) and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as they apply to commercial roofing systems, including significant new provisions for tornado-prone regions and whole-building airtightness testing that could impact your next project. In this course, we provide the knowledge and practical tools needed to navigate code compliance with confidence, identify the correct requirements for any jurisdiction in the United States, and ensure your roofing system designs meet both current standards and emerging requirements.
Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic structure of building codes related to commercial roofing systems and how specific codes are established by state and local jurisdictions to keep building occupants safe, healthy, and comfortable.
  • Locate the applicable building codes for any specific state and city in the U.S. using available online tools.
  • Identify the latest key code requirements for commercial roofs and how to apply these requirements to ensure that roof system design and material selection meet these requirements.
  • Recall available online resources to determine how to meet specific roof-related requirements of the appropriate building code in order to assure the safety and welfare of building occupants.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: James Hoff
Jim Hoff is an experienced executive and consultant in the building materials industry. Jim currently serves as President of TEGNOS Research, Inc. a consulting organization dedicated to expanding understanding of the building envelope. Since the founding of TEGNOS, Dr. Hoff has provided a wide variety of strategic and technical consulting services to dozens of governmental, non-profit and corporate organizations, and recent clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U. S. EPA, building material trade associations, building materials manufacturers, building envelope designers and private equity firms. In addition to his industry research and consulting activity, Dr. Hoff also serves as the instructor for the successful "Commercial Roofing Boot Camp" course co-sponsored by Building Envelope Magazine. Jim has published numerous papers addressing a variety of technical and business topics germane to the building envelope industry and is a frequent speaker at building envelope, sustainability, and energy efficiency conferences.
