Lighting design is a process. It is the process of integrating light into the fabric of architecture. Regardless of the space to be lighted -- a bank, a church, an office, a gallery, a restaurant, a store, a classroom -- and regardless of the light sources available for use, the process is always the same. Because lighting design is a process, it can be learned. This course series traces the steps in the lighting design process much as a professional performs them in practice.

This 2-hour interactive online course delves into light control and photometrics. First, it explains the external devices employed to modify light sources so that they provide the desired direction and distribution of light and control glare. With the light sources modified, the course then illustrates how we use photometry to predict the quantity of light in completed space. This course includes a test at the end of each section. This course includes PDF files which must be downloaded by the student.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Know how to use reflectors to direct light where it is wanted and block it from where it is unwanted
  • Be familiar with the different types of reflectors and reflector contours
  • Understand the transmission and refraction of light
  • Know how light is measured
  • Have reviewed illuminance calculations and be able to figure out the illuminance of a source using the inverse-square method
  • Understand the importance of surface relectance in lighting design
