Since its development in the 1800s the low-slope, or “flat” roof has become the dominate roof configuration used in commercial and institutional buildings. During this time, the technology driving low-slope roofing also has evolved, from traditional “tar and gravel” roofs to modern single-ply roofing systems. As a result, today’s low-slope roofing systems offer superior performance and flexibility while reducing installation and maintenance costs. And this evolution continues, with new technologies to improve roof performance and value introduced almost constantly.
 
To help the building designer and manager take advantage of this ongoing evolution in low-slope roofing, this webinar will review the latest technological advances and provide tools to integrate these technologies into the design and management of low-slope roofing systems. First, the webinar will provide a brief overview of the history of low-slop roofing to show how new market demands have led to the deployment of new technologies to improve roof performance. Next, the webinar will provide an in-depth look at the most recent technologies being introduced into low-slope roofing, with an emphasis on the advantages and challenges of these technologies. Finally, the webinar will offer a step-by-step approach to implementing these latest technologies in new roof design and existing roof retrofit and management.

Course Objectives
1. Understand how modern low-slope roofing systems have evolved and how they have improved building performance and the health and safety of building occupants.
2. Identify and discuss the newest technologies being introduced for low-slope roof applications and the benefits they offer.
3. Review the advantages for each new low-slope roofing technology as well as the challenges to the effective implementation of these technologies.
4. Evaluate and select the most suitable technologies for different roofing conditions in order to optimize overall building performance and assure occupant health and safety.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: James Hoff
Jim Hoff is an experienced executive and consultant in the building materials industry. Jim currently serves as President of TEGNOS Research, Inc. a consulting organization dedicated to expanding understanding of the building envelope. Since the founding of TEGNOS, Dr. Hoff has provided a wide variety of strategic and technical consulting services to dozens of governmental, non-profit and corporate organizations, and recent clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U. S. EPA, building material trade associations, building materials manufacturers, building envelope designers and private equity firms. In addition to his industry research and consulting activity, Dr. Hoff also serves as the instructor for the successful "Commercial Roofing Boot Camp" course co-sponsored by Building Envelope Magazine. Jim has published numerous papers addressing a variety of technical and business topics germane to the building envelope industry and is a frequent speaker at building envelope, sustainability, and energy efficiency conferences.
