This course provides a focused review of 2026 National Electrical Code changes related to electrical enclosures, wiring methods, and general-use equipment. Learners will examine how the Code governs the installation and use of boxes, cabinets, meter socket enclosures, conduit bodies, fittings, handhole enclosures, raceways, cables, support hardware, and cable trays. Topics include service conductors in enclosures, ceiling fan box ratings, wiring accessibility, listed support hardware, MC and NM cable applications, cable bending radius, dissimilar metal contact, RMC and IMC terminations and fittings, nonmetallic raceway sizing, and cable tray clearance requirements.

The course also covers general-use equipment requirements, including revised scopes for Articles 404 and 406, wiring device termination rules, GFCI protection for replacement receptacles, prohibited locations for upward-facing receptacles, park and recreation area requirements, and field marking requirements for switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, and motor control centers. Additional topics include central heating equipment circuiting, conductive pavement heating systems, new motor design types, adjustable speed drives, and listing requirements for medium-voltage switchgear and industrial control assemblies.

By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to apply updated 2026 NEC requirements for enclosure, wiring method, and general-use equipment installations in a safe and code-compliant manner.
Course Objectives
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Explain requirements for service conductors in enclosures, ceiling fan-rated boxes, and wiring accessibility in boxes.

Identify listing and installation requirements for support hardware, fittings, conduit bodies, and handhole enclosures.

Describe permitted uses and installation requirements for AC cable, MC cable, NM cable, and NMC cable.

Apply NEC requirements for cable bending radius, dissimilar metal contact, RMC and IMC terminations, and RMC and IMC fittings.

Recall allowable sizes for nonmetallic raceways and free space requirements around cable trays.

Explain revised requirements for switches, wiring devices, replacement receptacles, upward-facing receptacles, and park and recreation area installations.

Describe field marking and circuiting requirements for switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, motor control centers, and central heating equipment.

Identify updated requirements for conductive pavement heating systems, motor design types, adjustable speed drives, and equipment exceeding 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC.

Ryan Jackson Photo
Ryan Jackson is a combination inspector in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. He began his career as a carpenter while in high school, and began doing electrical work at the age of 18. At the age of 23 Ryan landed his first job as an electrical inspector, and subsequently became certified in building, plumbing, and mechanical inspection, as well as building and electrical plan review. Two years after becoming an inspector, he was approached by a friend in the area asking him to fill in at an electrical seminar for him. After his first class he was hooked, and is now a highly sought after seminar instructor. Ryan has taught in several states, and loves helping people increase their understanding of the Code.

 

He has been involved in writing and editing over 25 books on the National Electrical Code, and has taught the subject in multiple states and for multiple colleges and universities. He is self-employed as an NEC® consultant and inspector.

 
When Ryan isn’t working, he can often be found in his garage turning wood on his lathe, in his basement exercising, or any quiet place where he can dive into a book. He is also a rabid University of Utah football fan. Ryan married his high school sweetheart, Sharie, and they have two beautiful children together: Kaitlynn and Aaron.
