This course will cover the development of the equivalent seismic force based on IBC 2012 and ASCE 7-10 using ASCE 7-10 Section 12.8. The development of seismic forces using the Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure equation V=Cs * W will be explained through the terms of Newton's 2nd Law. The course will define the forces generated during an earthquake and how those forces travel through the building to the ground.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
List the types of forces generated by an earthquake
Summarize the general nature of Newtons 2nd law and how it is the basis of the Equivalent Lateral Force Method
Calculate how to combine the importance of the buildings function, grounds ability to shake and the structures ability to withstand that shaking into a single representative earthquake force
Recognize the significance of the ductility of the lateral force resisting systems
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Jill Nelson, PE, SE, LEED AP BD+C
