Course Objectives
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- State how energy modeling may be used to make cost effective decisions while also maximizing energy efficiency.
- Articulate how and why early design phase modeling helps quantify decision making, has low environmental impact, and improves occupant health and well-being.
- Explain the advantages of solar PV, small wind, and combined heat and power for optimal thermal comfort.
- Describe how different energy modeling tools may be used to produce differing levels of service depending on timing and scope.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Michael Bigelow
Michael exemplifies the results-driven energy engineering professional with more than nine years of consulting experience. He has in-depth expertise in energy efficient LEED design. His demonstrated success in project management and energy analysis studies has resulted in new lines of business and expanded technical service offerings. Michael is noted for the ability to manage multiple functions, identify critical issues, and implement cost-effective solutions. A prime example of this is the Village Lindo Paseo (now Suites on Paseo), a set of three 4-story dormitories in San Diego, California that achieved LEED Silver while saving over $1 million in up-front costs, and $70,000 in annual operational costs. Michael was responsible for creating full building energy simulations, conducting life cycle cost, tariff, and clean generation impact analyses. He was then retained by the project owners to provide consulting support through construction, commissioning and operations phases of project. As GBS’ Senior Technical Services Consultant, Michael develops energy models that provide cost saving insights and inform design decisions. His background in mechanical engineering and clean generation allows him to translate technical details into meaningful data. Fiercely committed to transparency and providing actionable results, Michael repeatedly grows contracts into relationships.
