Cementitious masonry is hardened by chemical reactions. This 1-hour interactive online course covers the properties and uses of such cementitious masonry as: concrete brick and block as well as sand-lime brick, and cast stone. We will also look at special units, which includes flashing blocks, angled units, and special block used for laying curved walls.

Objectives

Course Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Describe how concrete brick, sand-lime brick, cast stone, and autoclaved aerated concrete block are produced and used.
• List the standards and requirements for producing concrete block.
• Explain the uses of proprietary specialty units such as flashing blocks, angled units for making 45° corners and intersections, among others.
• Describe the properties and characteristics of cementious masonry units in terms of strength, absorption, volume changes, resistance to fire, sound, and heat, and variety of colors

Existing industry information has been assembled and correlated into a single, concise, and complete reference. Two sources used in the development of this course have been publications of the Brick Institute of America and the National Concrete Association, especially the BIA ''Technical Notes'' series and the NCMA ''TEK Bulletins.''
