Green Infrastructure in Urban Areas involves reducing the amount of paving and impervious surfaces and providing greener, more environmentally sustainable solutions that address urban issues such as stormwater runoff and flooding, heat index, air quality, energy use, climate change, urban pollution, and economics. Green Infrastructure solutions include rain gardens, planter boxes, green parking, green roofs, urban tree canopy, land conservation, integrated stormwater management, rainwater harvesting, permeable paving, and other techniques that have been adapted for urban settings. The economic, environmental, and social benefits of Urban Green Infrastructure will be evaluated.

  • Identify the health and welfare benefits of Green Infrastructure in Urban Areas by documenting measurable results from implemented projects and developments. Develop a framework for identifying opportunities and standard characteristics that promote physical activity and social cohesion in urban areas.
