Adhesives are compounds that can be used alone or supplement another joining mechanism to hold two substrates together. The type of adhesive used in each application depends on the nature of the substrates and the conditions to which the adhesive joint will be exposed. This course will describe the basic theories of adhesion, adhesive classifications, and common adhesives. It will also discuss important surface preparation and adhesive application considerations, and some advantages and disadvantages of adhesives compared to other joining mechanisms.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Describe the main theories of adhesion – mechanical, electrostatic, adsorption, and diffusion
  • Define “adhesion,” “cohesion,” “cure time,” “tack,” and “viscosity”
  • Describe natural and synthetic adhesives
  • Describe the four curing methods for physically hardening adhesives
  • Describe the four curing methods for chemically reactive single component adhesives
  • List important attributes for two component adhesives
  • List guidelines for surface preparation
  • Identify which adhesive joint design is the strongest
  • List advantages and disadvantages of adhesives compared to other joining mechanisms
